Biography:
Sean Webley is a cinematographer, visual artist, and writer whose work moves between documentary film, photography, experimental form, and publishing. Whether shooting on Super 16mm in the Idaho wilderness or exhibiting at the Guggenheim Bilbao, he brings the same visual approach to every medium: an eye trained to find the story inside the frame.
His two most recent features premiered within weeks of each other at two of the country's major documentary festivals: Seconds Away at the Austin Film Festival, and The Voyage Out at DOC NYC. Forbes compared Seconds Away to Hoop Dreams, noting that the filmmakers "captured a slice of life in a way that is not often presented on screen." The Voyage Out, shot entirely on Super 16mm film, was described as quietly profound and unexpectedly moving.
His short film Beef was shortlisted for Cannes Directors' Fortnight and went on to win the Experimental Spirit Award at the Brooklyn Film Festival and Best Experimental Film at the Nashville Film Festival. His films have also screened at SXSW, the Santa Barbara International Film Festival, the Vancouver International Film Festival, and the Shanghai International Film Festival. His film-poem series Poets in Space, featuring Pulitzer Prize winner Jericho Brown, was acquired by The Paris Review.
As a screenwriter, Webley has sold original scripts and received multiple awards from the PAGE International Screenwriting Awards and the Austin Film Festival.
Webley's visual art has been exhibited internationally in galleries, museums, and installation spaces, including at the Guggenheim Museum Bilbao. His practice often explores memory, meaning, image-making, and the boundary between truth and aesthetic construction. He has also written graphic novels, children's books, novels, and is currently writing essays about visual art on Substack.
In addition to his independent artistic work, Webley is the founder and creative director of Primitive Collective, a studio that merges art, cinema, and branding through high-end visual storytelling. Their commercial and collaborative projects have garnered millions of views, been featured in AdWeek and Forbes, and earned recognition for their fusion of craft, design, and emotional resonance.
Webley holds an MFA from Columbia University and has lectured on visual language and art at MIT, Boston University, and Lesley University. He currently teaches at Ringling College of Art and Design.
